Fitch Even Partner John Naber Assists with ABA National Appellate Advocacy Competition

April 14, 2011

Fitch Even partner John M. Naber recently participated in the Washington, D.C., regional round of the 32nd annual National Appellate Advocacy Competition (NAAC), sponsored by the American Bar Association Law Student Division. Mr. Naber took on the role of Chief Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court for this round of the competition, which took place at the U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia.

The NAAC, one of the largest and most prestigious law student competitions in the nation, emphasizes the development of oral advocacy skills through a realistic appellate advocacy experience. Teams of law students participate in a hypothetical appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court, writing a brief as either respondent or petitioner and then arguing the case in front of the mock court. This year, 217 teams entered six regional competitions, with 24 teams advancing to the national finals in Chicago. The topic for the 2010-2011 competition was "A First Amendment Challenge to a State Law Regulating the Advertisement of Medicine."

Mr. Naber, a seasoned intellectual property lawyer based in Washington, D.C., counsels clients in the U.S. and abroad, focusing his practice on patent preparation and prosecution, due diligence, product clearance and legal opinions, and licensing issues.
